Why European Brands Are Switching to Vegan Insulated Jackets

The Word Every European Buyer Is Asking About
Three years ago, almost nobody asked us if our jackets were vegan. Today, it’s one of the first questions we hear from European brands — especially from Sweden, Germany, and the UK. The shift has been fast, and it’s not slowing down. If you’re building an outerwear brand for the European market and you’re not exploring vegan insulated jackets, you risk missing fast-growing consumer demand.
The reason is simple: European consumers check labels. A survey by PETA showed that over 60% of shoppers in the UK and Germany actively look for cruelty-free options when buying clothing. Retailers recognise this trend — which is why buyers you meet at trade shows and sourcing meetings increasingly request animal-free documentation before examining physical samples.
Last year, when we attended Texworld Paris, we witnessed this shift firsthand. A Danish buyer toured the venue and only visited booths offering animal-free insulated outerwear. His opening question was: ‘Are all filling materials you use fully synthetic?’
What ‘Vegan’ Actually Means in Jacket Manufacturing
Let’s clear up the terminology, as it is widely misused across the apparel industry. A vegan insulated jacket means every component of the garment contains no animal-derived materials. No animal-based fills, no leather patches, no wool linings, no horn buttons. All materials must be synthetic or plant-based alternatives.
At our factory, suitable options include PrimaLoft, Thinsulate, recycled polyester fibre fill, and Sorona bio-based insulation. For outer shells, we work with standard nylon, polyester, and recycled variants of both. Zippers use synthetic tape; labels are woven polyester. High-performance jackets can be fully produced without any animal-derived ingredients, with quality that matches or outperforms traditional animal-based alternatives.
One vital distinction: a jacket made with synthetic fill is not automatically certified vegan. Independent certification verifies that every component meets requirements, including often-overlooked elements such as sewing thread, adhesives, and finishing chemicals that standard buyers rarely inspect, yet brand auditors will check. This is where PETA-Approved Vegan certification adds value for European retailers.
We are currently completing PETA-approved vegan certification for our full PrimaLoft collection, targeting Q4 2026.
The Certifications That Actually Matter
Not all certifications carry equal weight with European buyers. Here is the guidance we share with our clients:
PETA-Approved Vegan: Widely recognised benchmark for animal-free product claims, frequently required by retailers across the UK and Germany. The certification validates supplier declarations covering all garment components, including thread and adhesives.
BSCI: Not vegan-specific, yet essential for European buyers, who seek both ethical labour standards and animal-free materials. The two requirements often go hand in hand. Our factory holds a valid BSCI certification.
GRS (Global Recycled Standard): Increasingly paired with vegan credentials. A GRS-certified recycled polyester vegan jacket delivers a complete sustainability narrative: zero animal materials, reduced virgin plastic usage.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100: Confirms materials are free from hazardous chemicals. Often mandatory alongside vegan certification for kids’ outerwear.
The trend is unambiguous: brands holding combined certifications — vegan + recycled material + ethical labour — gain a clear competitive advantage at retail. Retail buyers are prepared to accept higher production costs for verified compliance, as robust documentation reduces their own market risks.
How to Position Your Brand as Cruelty-Free
If you plan to launch a vegan insulated jacket line, these are the proven strategies we recommend based on client experience:
State the claim clearly on the labelling. Do not rely on customers to guess. Mark hangtags and care labels with ‘100% Vegan’ or ‘Cruelty-Free’. Our German partners confirm this detail alone boosts in-store conversion.
Secure formal certification. PETA-Approved Vegan remains the most recognised standard across Europe. Lead times and costs vary depending on your product range; our team can share realistic timelines and guidance. The return on investment becomes visible immediately when you present the certification logo to retail buyers.
Share your material story. Avoid generic phrases such as ‘synthetic fill’. Specify details like ‘GRS-certified recycled polyester fill’. European consumers want transparency on what goes into a jacket, not just what has been excluded.
Test the market with small runs. You do not need to convert your entire collection at once. Launch a dedicated vegan line with minimum order quantities starting at 10 pieces, measure market feedback, and scale gradually.
A key reminder we pass to emerging apparel brands: update your website and social channels to highlight vegan credentials, referencing animal-free construction. We have observed multiple brands producing fully vegan jackets that failed to promote this feature in marketing, creating unnecessary uncertainty for prospective buyers during sourcing.
Important note: Do not confuse vegan construction with sustainable production. While many vegan materials support sustainability goals, the two terms are not interchangeable. European consumers and professional buyers increasingly recognise this difference, so clear communication avoids misleading claims.
