Alpine Regions: 120–180 gsm high-loft insulation for skiwear and outdoor brands, paired with waterproof, breathable shell fabrics. Cold, wet, and windy conditions require balanced warmth and moisture management, not just heavy fill.
The smartest strategy I’ve seen is what one of our German clients did: they ordered the same jacket design in three GSM weights and launched them as a single collection. 60gsm for spring, 100gsm for winter, 160gsm for Nordic markets. Same design, same production line, triple the market coverage.
Common GSM Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

Mistake 1: Choosing fill weight based on cost alone. Yes, 60gsm is cheaper than 100gsm. But if your customers expect warmth and get a thin jacket, you’ll pay for it in returns and bad reviews. Spend the extra dollar on material — it’s cheaper than losing customers.
Mistake 2: Forgetting that GSM affects the jacket’s silhouette. A 160gsm jacket looks completely different from a 60gsm jacket, even with the exact same shell fabric. With the same fill material, higher GSM means more bulk, puffiness, and structure. If your brand leans into sleek minimalism, avoid going above 100gsm.
