Three Days, Hundreds of Booths. Where Do You Start?

Paris Le Bourget in late August is a buyer’s marathon. Three days, hundreds of booths, and every exhibitor telling you they’re the best jacket factory in China. If you walk in without a plan, you’ll leave with a bag of brochures and no idea who to trust. This guide is the checklist we wish every buyer brought to the show — built from the questions we hear again and again as a padded jacket factory exhibiting at Texworld & Apparel Sourcing Paris.
The good news? You don’t need to be a sourcing expert to evaluate a factory in ten minutes. You need the right questions and the discipline to look at samples the way a quality inspector would. Let’s break it into four steps.
At our last Texworld, a buyer from Berlin spent 20 minutes with us going through several of the questions below. By the end of the conversation, he had already added our sales manager’s WhatsApp — before he even left the booth.
Step 1 — Do Your Homework Before You Fly
The buyers who get the best results at Texworld spend an hour before the trip defining three things: product (padded jackets, quilted jackets, or synthetic insulated outerwear?), volume (small batch or full container?), and compliance (BSCI, OEKO-TEX, GRS — which do your retailers require?). Write these down. A clear brief is the difference between a productive meeting and a vague “we’ll get back to you.”
This is also the moment to familiarize yourself with your GSM. If you’re unsure of the fill weight your market needs, read our padded jacket GSM guide before you board the plane — it takes just five minutes and will change how you evaluate samples on the floor.
Most of the European brands we work with start with 80g or 100g GSM for autumn, and move up to 120–160g for deep winter. Tell us your target GSM, and we’ll show you the exact difference on real samples.
Step 2 — Ask Questions That Separate Factories from Traders
Anyone can rent a booth and show pretty samples. Real factories answer specifics. Here are the five questions we suggest every buyer ask:
- Where is the factory, and can you visit? A real factory names its city and welcomes visits. A trader gets vague.
- Do you make the fill yourself or buy it in? Ask about the insulation — PrimaLoft, Thinsulate, recycled polyester. Factories with established material partners answer instantly.
- How long is the sampling, and what does it cost? Seven-day sampling with swatches included is a strong signal. A factory that hesitates on this answer will delay your launch.
- What’s your real MOQ? If your launch is small, you need a partner who starts at 10 pieces — not a factory that secretly means 300.
- Who does quality control, and at what stage? Look for in-line inspection during production, not just a final check at the end.
- Ask to see the same style in two GSM weights side by side — any capable factory can pull both from the sample rack in under a minute.
Step 3 — Inspect the Jacket, Not Just the Booth

Anyone can talk; the sample rack is the proof. Here’s what to check when a salesperson hands you a jacket:
- Feel the fill. Squeeze the sleeve. Premium synthetic insulation recovers its loft quickly; low-grade fill stays flat.
- Check the stitching. Clean seams, no loose threads at stress points like the underarms and zipper area.
- Open the zippers. Repeatedly. A low-quality zip on a premium jacket is a dealbreaker your customers will find before you do.
- Read the labels. The composition label should clearly state synthetic insulation if you’re sourcing for Europe, and check that the fill care instructions match what you were told.
- Ask for certificates — BSCI, OEKO-TEX, GRS — and check the dates. Expired paperwork is as bad as no paperwork.
Step 4 — The Follow-Up Decides Everything
Here’s the part most buyers skip: within 48 hours of the show, email every factory you shortlisted. Restate your brief in three lines, ask for a written quotation, and a sampling timeline. Then watch what happens. Fast, detailed replies tell you more about the factory’s process than anything you saw at the booth. Slow replies tell you something, too.
At this stage, ask for real proof: production-line videos, fabric swatch books by mail, and a reference order you can call. A confident factory will send all three without blinking.
One brand we met at a show emailed us on a Sunday night back in 2023; our quote and sample plan were in their inbox by Monday morning. They’re still a client today.
